Took a trip to the Hop Capital of the world "Yakima Wa" to tour the Hop fields and the factory where these hop vines are processed into bails and pellets. These hop vines grow as much as 1 foot everyday the last month of their cycle. Hops contribute bitterness, flavor and aroma to beer. They also reduce the potential for bacterial infection and contribute other positive chemical properties. Technically hops are flowers, but they look more like small green pine cones. There are dozens of different hop varieties and each contributes a slightly different character to beer. The flavors and aromas associated with hops include flowery, perfumy, spicy, herbal, resinous, citrusy and grassy characteristics.
Vines are growing a foot a day!

Machine that takes the cones off the vines
mmmmmmm...the smell of fresh hops!
No trip to this part of the country is complete without a visit to the "American Hop Museum in Toppenish, WA (south of Yakima)
