Lewis & Clark Brewing Co. Earns Gold Medal at the

2020 Great American Beer Festival®

Back Country Scottish Ale recognized at world’s largest professional beer competition

Helena, MT (October 20, 2020) — Lewis & Clark Brewing Co. was awarded a gold medal at the

2020 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition, presented by the Brewers Association.

The best beers in 91 beer categories covering 170 different beer styles (including all

subcategories) were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals during a virtual ceremony Friday,

October 16, hosted on The Brewing Network.

Lewis & Clark Brewing Co. was recognized in the Scottish Ale beer-style category for its Back

Country Scottish Ale. Back Country Scottish Ale is crafted with Montana-grown and malted pale

barley, along with roasted black barley which yields a dark rich color and a subtle roasted

flavor. It has a malty character while being balance and drinkable. Back Country had previously

earned a Silver Medal at the GABF in 2014.

"We are honored to be recognized with a Gold Medal for our Back Country Scottish Ale and it is a testament to the passion, pride and attention to detail that our brewing and packaging team take each and every day to produce consistently high quality beers. I am so proud of our team. Our competition beers are taken right off the shelf; we send in the same 6- packs you see on the store shelf. Montana loves its Scottish Ales, and we are extremely honored to bring home the first GABF Gold Medal in this category to our home state,” said Max Pigman, Owner at Lewis & Clark Brewing Company.

Judges for the 34th edition of the celebrated competition evaluated 8,806 entries from 1,720

breweries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Socially distanced judging took place in 35

sessions over 18 days with strict safety measures.

“This year’s GABF competition may have looked a little different, but the beers entered into the

competition were as impressive and innovative as ever,” said Chris Swersey, competition

manager, Great American Beer Festival. “This has arguably been one of the most challenging

years breweries have ever faced, so we hope these awards serve as a symbol not only of

brewing excellence but also the resiliency of the craft brewing community as a whole.”
